Sclerotherapy is the treatment of spider veins of the legs.
The solution used in our office is Polidoconal .5%. This solution
works by drying out the tiny cells which line the blood vessels.
Slight stinging can sometimes be felt when the solution is
being injected. Each vessel may require 1 to 3 injections
so more than one session is usually needed. Vessels usually
disappear over a period of 2-4 weeks. This is a gradual process.
Also, this treatment does not prevent new veins from developing.
The usual session is 20 minutes long and the cost is $120-$180
for a 3cc syringe of solution.
Post Treatment Care
You may remove the spot Band-aids and compression wraps
at bedtime unless otherwise instructed.
Patients who have had larger caliber veins treated may be
asked to wear light support hose for three days following
the procedure.
Light exercise, such as walking, is permitted the day following
the procedure. You may engage in more vigorous activity three
days following the procedure.
Expect to see some degree of redness and swelling (inflammation)
in the days to weeks following sclerotherapy. Inflammation
of the vein is required for its closure.
Allow at least a one month interval between treatments. You
will see a gradual improvement.
If you develop a blister or scab in an injection site, please
notify the office. Until you have received further instructions,
you should apply Vaseline jelly and keep the area covered
with a Band-aid until you can be evaluated by the physician
or nurse.
